My Maggie. Maggie's story has already inspired thousands and hopefully will inspire thousands more. It is the story of my wife. We were childhood sweethearts who grew up in the inner city of Chicago. In those tender years, our relationship blossomed from a courtship into a 32 year marriage. As you will find out it is one great love story.
But it is also the story of a woman who overcame one enormous obstacle after another, to live a complete life mostly filled with joy and happiness. She suffered from a disease called Usher Syndrome which progressively robbed her of both her sight and hearing.
Maggie also battled three different cancers: skin cancer, breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Yet she was the happiest person I have ever known. She was a counselor for the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind, as well as their chief Volunteer officer. She advised the governor of Illinois, and lobbied at the state capitol in Springfield, and in Washington, D.C. She was also involved in countless causes on behalf and the sight impaired, blind and deaf.
Maggie's life certainly wasn't easy, and this book does not ignore or sugarcoat the many valleys in her life. Maggie wasn't a saint, and she would not have wanted me to paint a distorted picture of what she went through. She would have demanded a truthful account, and that is what I have written.
While there is struggle and sadness in the pages of
My Maggie it is not just a big sob story. She was a self-described goof and most of this book is about a determined, energetic rascal who squeezed every moment of joy out of her 53 years. We truly had a blast together. Maggie would have killed me if I had written a long melancholy chronicle.
My Maggie sold 5,000 copies in the first two weeks after it was published. It has been endorsed by Chicago's first lady Maggie Daley and has been praised by the prestigious Publishers Weekly. I have appeared twice on NBC's Today Show- once with Meredith Viera and again with Lester Holt.
My Maggie was featured on the Bonnie Hunt Show - a new nationally syndicated talk show. It is pushing 20,000 copies in sales and is on waiting lists at libraries across the country. I am making several speaking engagements for the book. A portion of the proceeds from every printed book and audio book goes to the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind and the American Cancer Society.
